Milk tea and fruit juice establishments in Cordova town are again reminded about the ban on using plastic drinking straws.

LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — The use of plastic drinking straws is totally banned in the Municipality of Cordova and Mayor Cesar “Didoy” Suan intends to keep it that way.

Mayor Suan warned business establishments to no longer use them as the town has already implemented a total ban on the product.

Suan made the statement after he observed that most establishments selling milk tea and fruit juices were still using them.

In March 2023, the town approved Ordinance No. 2022-83, which prohibits the use of single-use plastic and styrofoam during Wednesdays and Saturdays.

However, in its provision, the ordinance implements a total ban on plastic drinking straws.

“The use of plastic drinking straws is absolutely prohibited in all stores, restaurants, and other business establishments within the Municipality of Cordova,” the provision stated.

This week, Suan inspected some establishments together with the Business Process and Licensing Office, Solid Waste Management, and Solid Waste Management Task Force. They then found out that almost all milk tea and fruit juice stores were still using plastic drinking straws.

Due to this, Suan gave them a verbal warning and ordered them to follow the ordinance.

He also warned them that the town would issue citation tickets and they would be fined if they were caught violating the ordinance again.

Violators may pay a fine ranging from P500 to P2,500 and revocation of their business permit and/or closure of the establishment.      /rcg
