Ex-convict shot dead in Mambaling, police after person of interest

CEBU CITY, Philippines – An ex-convict was killed after he was shot in the head by an unidentified assailant on his way home in Sitio Proper Alaska, Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City early Wednesday morning, October 4, 2023.

Authorities said the victim was a man of legal age, jobless, and a resident of the barangay. The victim is also described as an ex-convict who was released recently.

Initial investigation of the Mambaling Police Station revealed that the ex-convict was walking towards his residence when he was attacked.

While the victim was walking along the road, the assailant allegedly waited for him and suddenly approached him when he passed by.

The assailant reportedly pointed a gun at the victim and shot him once hitting him on the head. After the victim fell, the assailant fled from the crime scene.

After a concerned citizen reported the alleged shooting incident to the police station at around 4:00 a.m., personnel rushed to the scene.  

According to the police report, personnel of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CCDRRMO) assessed the victim at the scene and declared him dead when he showed no signs of life.

The victim was found with a single bullet wound on his head.

Person of interest

The Mambaling Police Station confirmed that they already have a person of interest. However, they said they would be verifying the person of interest and the links of other personalities to the killed ex-convict.

Initial investigation revealed that the victim was previously tied to illegal drugs based on interviews with residents in the area. But the police said they will be conducting further investigation to verify this.

The station also found out that the victim allegedly had a fight with another convict while in prison which is another angle that they will be looking into.

The police said they would also be investigating what firearm was used in the shooting of the ex-convict as there was no gun or bullet recovered from the crime scene.   /rcg
