83-year-old vendor in Guadalupe, Cebu City inspires netizens

CEBU CITY, Philippines— An 83-year-old vendor selling goods in Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City is touching the hearts netizens.

The story of Nanay Martis became known after a netizen shared her story on his social media account.

That netizen is Dinio Dagooc, 22, a college student here.

He shared his short encounter with Nanay Marits Tuban on his Facebook account.

“After fetching the kids, we decided to go to the Guadalupe Church. Then my friend, named Jullianne, was talking to someone. It was Nanay, who sells recycled items like fans and bags,” he said.

After getting to know Nanay Marits they decided to buy some of Nanay’s items.

Nanay Marits sells “pamaypay,” or handheld fans, and bags which are made out of used sachet packets.

Dinio said he took to his Facebook account to share how he was so inspired about what Nanay was doing. He wanted to show his appreciation to Nanay, who was still selling despite her advanced age.

“We all know na not all [are] gonna appreciate [her efforts.] And it’s quite [unique], what she [is doing]. Despite the challenges she might face, she is really fighting fair and square,” he said.

CDN Digital posted Nanay’s story on Tuesday morning, October 10. As of 2:38 p.m., it has already been shared 264 times.
