Pason tops Rising Chess tilt

CEBU CITY, Philippines—Elite woodpusher Allan Pason ruled the open category of the recently concluded Rising Chess Unlimited Developmental Program at the CCC Chess Club at the Robinsons Galleria at the North Reclamation Area in Cebu City, over the weekend. 

Pason walked away with the P5,000 champion’s purse in the tournament and participated with over a hundred woodpushers in the open and team categories. 

Pason, a member of the Toledo-Xignex Trojans of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP), finished his campaign with 8.0 points after nine rounds.

He was tied with eventual second-placer National Master (NM) Joey Albert Florendo who also scored 8.0 points.

However, Pason had a higher tie-break score than NM Florendo, earning him the title. NM Cyril Ortega finished third with 7.5 points. 

The fourth to 10th placers in the open category were Remegio Galenzoga III (7.5), Anthony Makinano (7.5), International Master (IM) Kim Steven Yap (7.0), Johnny Carzano (7.0), Michael Renz Canonoy (7.0), Khalid Ontawar (7.0), and Ceferino Vizco (7.0), respectively.

They were ranked according to their total tie-break points. 

In the team event, Bulacao Chess Club emerged as champions. They earned a P30,000 cash prize, while the second place went to Dark Knights.

Bulacao Chess Club was manned by Dennis Navales, Cephas Seguisabal, and Isagani Luna Jr.

The Dark Knights earned P20,000, while AJJR Starbox rounded off the top three teams in the tournament, earning them P10,000. 

The fourth and fifth placers were Escarilas and the RCM Ri Masters.
