Parking attendant killed in Cebu City shooting

CEBU CITY, Philippines – A parking attendant was shot dead by a still unidentified assailant while he was working in front of an eatery in Katipunan Street, Barangay Labangon, Cebu City on Wednesday evening, October 18, 2023.

The shooting incident took place at around 8:50 p.m. but was reported to the authorities at around 9:15 p.m. 

Upon receiving the call, personnel of the Labangon Police Station rushed to the crime scene to respond. 

The victim was identified as 30-year-old Niño Dignos Dacuba, a resident of Sitio Callejon, Barangay Labangon, Cebu City.

The police report revealed that at the time of the incident, the victim was standing by the roadside while performing his duties as a parking attendant.

The victim was reportedly watching over motorcycles parked in front of the eatery when a man who was wearing a blue t-shirt and black pants allegedly approached the victim, drew a gun, and shot the victim twice.  

After the attack, the alleged suspect immediately fled the crime scene, the report said.

According to the report, the victim has been previously arrested and served a sentence for three cases of robbery, two cases of theft, and two cases of gambling.

Police are now conducting a follow-up investigation and hot-pursuit operation to determine the motive and arrest the perpetrator.

Meanwhile, the parking attendant’s mother, who goes by the name Mina, said in an interview that when a neighbor came rushing to her saying that her son was killed, she immediately headed to the eatery where he worked.

She said that when she arrived, she saw her son bloody and lying lifeless on the ground.

A life in the dark

The victim’s mother stated that it was hard for her to believe as she last talked to her son at around 5:00 p.m.

She narrated that her son had been in jail since 2018 and got out in 2020 for a robbery charge. She added that despite her advice, her son had bad habits and used illegal drugs.

According to Mina, she has no idea who could have killed her son as she also did not know of any death threats received by him while working as a parking attendant. 

The mother pleaded with the perpetrator to turn himself in. She also asked authorities to solve her son’s murder as soon as possible.
