MANDAUE CITY, Cebu – The Bohol Provincial Government was recognized for its excellence in disaster risk reduction management and humanitarian assistance.

Governor Erico Aris Aumentado received the 2023 Gawad KALASAG Seal (Beyond Compliant Category) from Secretaries Gilberto Teodoro of the Department of National Defense and Benjamin Abalos Jr. of the Department of Interior and Local Government during the national awarding ceremony held in Manila on Monday, December 11.

“Sa tibuok Region 7, ang atong probinsya ang nag-inusara nila na gideklarar isip Beyond Compliant na LGU sa Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, ug Humanitarian Assistance sa tuig 2O23,” Aumentado, who is also the chairperson of the Bohol Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management (PDRRM) Council, said in an advisory.

The award recognizes LGUs that adhere to Republic Act No. 10121 or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010, an act providing a comprehensive, all-hazard, multi-sectoral, inter-agency, and community-based approach to disaster risk management through the formulation of the National Disaster Risk Management Framework.

The concept of Gawad KALASAG (KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan, SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan), according to the Office of Civil Defense, was adopted from the Filipino word ‘kalasag’ (shield) that was used by early Filipinos as a means to protect themselves from enemies or harmful animals.

Under the Strategic Change Agenda of the current administration, the provincial government aims to become resilient from calamities and hazards through strong disaster risk reduction management to prevent disaster losses.

Last year, PDRRMO also received a fully-compliant Gawad KALASAG Award for its disaster risk reduction management and services.
