Zamboanga City’s Sherwin Mohammad Managuil bagged his first triathlon win this year after topping the Funtastic Medellin-Mayor Ricky Ramirez Triathlon Cup yesterday at the quiet yet scenic town of Medellin north of Cebu.

Managuil, who shifted to triathlon from running last 2012, edged the heavily favored former Cobra Ironman 70.3 Ironman Filipino elite champion Noy Jopson en route to the crown.

He clocked three hours, 11 minutes and 44 seconds to finish first while Jopson finished in 3:13.16. Donray Noval rounded off the top three with a time of 3:29.47.

In the distaff side, Amale Jopson lived up to her lofty billing as she claimed the top spot in the overall race with a time of 3:55.45.

Maria Katrina Herrera settled for second place with a time of 4:23.29 while Mizraym Capangpangan landed at third, clocking 4:25.15.

Results in the different age groups weren’t available as of press time.

Meanwhile, Medellin Mayor Ricky Ramirez said he was happy with the outcome of the race, which was participated mostly by triathletes from Cebu City.

“The local economy benefited from this race because almost all of the available resorts here were fully booked,” he said.

“Because of this, we are already interested in staging Medellin’s very own triathlon race annually to showcase the beauty of the town and also to show everyone that Medellin has  already fully recovered from supertyphoon Yolanda.”
