Frequent headaches, excessive blinking, squinting, and constant eye rubbing- these are just a few of the many signs that a child may be myopic (nearsighted), which is often not given enough bearing or sometimes overlooked.
Our main goal is to help the patient, which goes beyond selling eyeglasses; we also provide a range of services.

Regular myopia screening is crucial as catching early signs of myopia can help slow its onset and progression.
Dr. Glenn De Las Peñas is an ophthalmologist passionate about the treatment of myopia, especially for the younger generations. He believes that myopia comes with many complications, not only for the vision of the children but also for their everyday lives.
Myopia, commonly referred to as nearsightedness, is a common eye condition where close objects may appear clear but those at a distance may appear blurry. It is important that myopia is diagnosed and managed early as it can get worse if left untreated resulting in irreversible loss of vision. People with myopia can experience poor vision quality, affecting their performance at school or work, and, at times, become targets of bullying and misunderstanding.
Unbeknownst to many, this condition is the offspring of unhealthy lifestyle practices, environmental factors such as daily use of digital devices for more than 2 hours or hereditary reasons, primarily because both or one of the child’s parents have myopia.
Due to its rise in the Philippines, with one of three school-aged children affected by it, Dr. Glenn hopes to combat myopia through prevention and slowing down its progression.
“Once myopia sets in, we can only slow it down but we cannot cure or reverse it. Thus, prevention plays a very important role in the management of myopia. Treatment for myopia may include low dose atropine eye drops, special types of spectacle lenses (glasses) & contact lenses.” said Dr. Glenn during an interview with CDN Digital.
Dr. Glenn also added that he wants to promote ocular health because he believes that it is best to prevent myopia from happening rather than spend money, time, or energy treating sight threatening conditions like myopic maculopathy & retinal detachment later in life. Limiting screen time & encouraging outdoor activities, such as hiking, sports, or swimming can significantly reduce the risk of myopia.
This passion has driven him to give free myopia consultations at his clinic, Focal Sight. Contrary to popular beliefs about optical shops, Focal Sight is an optical clinic that not only offers eyeglasses, contact lenses, eye drops, and other products but also offers services such as screenings for glaucoma, color vision deficiency, and, as mentioned, spot vision screening for myopia, among others.
“Our main goal is to help the patient, which goes beyond selling eyeglasses; we also provide a range of services,” Dr. Glenn exclaimed.
With Focal Sight’s experienced team of ophthalmologists and optometrists, a customized myopia control program based on the patient’s unique needs is available and proven effective.
