Baby boy killed in Basak knife attack

A one-year-old baby boy was killed when a man attacked his father with a knife in barangay Basak, Cebu City.

The boy was in his father Ralph Randy Sevilla Tieman’s arms when the attack happened.

The suspect, Richard Fhidel Suico, who was arrested in a hot-pursuit operation, told police he did not intend to kill the boy but Tieman, 39,  used him as a shield.

Richard Fhidel Suico answers a phone call at the Pardo Police Station where he was detained for attacking his neighbor with a knife.

Suico admitted he and Tieman bore grudges against each other.

Suico told police that Tieman had threatened him in the past, and to protect himself he carried a knife with him all the time.

“Batohon niya ang among balay sa una (He used to pelt my house with stones),” Suico said.

The suspect is aided by a walker after a metal brace was installed in his right leg. The man had been injured in a motorcycle accident.

Suico said Tieman went to his house around 8 p.m. Monday and challenged him to a fight.

Suico claimed that when he went outside his house, Tieman grabbed his walker and kicked his injured foot.

Suico drew a knife and stabbed the victim.  Tieman laid his son on the ground after he sustained stab wounds in the neck and head. The father was brought to the Chong Hua Hospital while his son was

taken to the Saint Anthony Mother and Child Sanitarium in Basak-San Nicolas.

SPO1 Rommel Bancog said Tieman initially told police investigators that his son was unharmed.

Bancog said police were later informed that the boy was already dead when brought to the hospital.
