Suspect in killing of barangay worker in Mambaling identified

CEBU CITY, Philippines — The suspect behind the killing of barangay worker in Brgy. Duljo Fatima, Cebu City, on Monday afternoon, June 17, has been identified by law enforcers.

The fatal shooting incident claimed the life of 44-year-old Edward Abayan, who works as an administration aid at the Mambaling Barangay Hall in Cebu City.

According to witnesses, Abayan was shot by a man as he was eating inside a carenderia along Spolarium Street in Brgy. Duljo Fatima at around 1 p.m. on Monday.

He died on the spot.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Janette Rafter, Deputy Director for Operations of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) told reporters on Wednesday, June 19, that investigation into the killing of barangay worker took a positive turn after the suspect has been identified.

Furthermore, Mambaling police are now preparing to file a murder charge against the assailant through regular filing.

This means that the suspect will be arrested after the issuance of a warrant of arrest.

Rafter, however, has opted not to disclose the identity and background of the suspect as the investigation is still ongoing.

She said that authorities are waiting for the availability of the victim’s family to formally file the complaint at the police station.

Rafter also gave credit to several witnesses who reportedly cooperated with the authorities in identifying the suspect in the killing of barangay worker.

“We really appreciate sa kaisog sa atong mga lumulopyo nianang lugara. Kay ug wala sila, walay mu-witness, mupadayon gyud ning ing-aning problemaha,” she stated.

As of this writing, police are still conducting a follow-up investigation to determine the possible motive behind Abayan’s death.

Brgy. Duljo Fatima is one of the most problematic barangays in Cebu City as far as the presence and distribution of illegal drugs is concerned.
