Despite having the more progressive economy, Cebu province has the least number of households with toilets in Central Visayas.
Nikko Dajao, environment occupational health coordinator of the Department of Health (DOH) in Central Visayas said only 68.15 percent of Cebu’s households have toilets compared to Bohol province with 88.56 percent.
About 85.2 percent of Siquijor’s households have toilets while more than 70 percent of Negros Oriental province’s households have toilets. Negros Oriental recently broke away to form the new Negros Region with Negros Occidental.
Dajao said Cebu has more towns and coastlines which can draw more settlers who cannot afford to build their own toilets.
He said they will visit San Remigio, north Cebu, Toledo City, south Cebu and Bais City and Guihulngan City in Negros Oriental to address this problem with the towns’ local government units.
The Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) Philippines also helped build toilets in Bantayan and Daanbantayan said Malou Gallarde, asst. manager of the Philippine Approach to Total Sanitation (PhATS), a program of the IRW.
