“Walay blackboard. Walay haligi. Kinsay makatarong og tuon ana? (No blackboard. No walls. Who could study well here)?”
Jennifer Cabanhit, mother of a Grade 2 pupil in Cebu City Central School, made this comment after seeing her daughter inside a tent that served as a makeshift classroom at the school’s quadrangle.
She said she and other parents were angry on seeing their children outside rather than inside their classrooms.
About 14 classrooms were occupied by 68 families displaced by the fire that hit sitio Kabulihan, barangay Sambag I, Cebu City on Monday night.
Cebu City Central School Principal Lyra Illaga said they will hold day and afternoon shift classes for the pupils.
She also said city officials assured her that the families will stay for only two to three weeks.
The blaze destroyed more than 50 houses and damaged four other structures.
The 27-year-old man accused of causing the fire was released from detention yesterday because no witnesses came forward to execute an affidavit against him.

SFO1 Ariel Balajadia of the Pahina Central Fire Station said they had to release Emmanuel Cuizon Camillo.
Camillo denied throwing a butane canister after an argument with his mother.
Some neighbors earlier reported that a butane canister exploded and caused the fire.
Camillo’s wife said he was with them sleeping when the fire broke out.
She corroborated Camillo’s statement that the fire came from the next room, which was occupied by her husband’s uncle Rusty Camillo.
