Barangay Banilad bested six other barangays in Mandaue City to win the 1st Inter-Barangay Basic Life Support Competition yesterday morning.
Banilad won P10,000 cash for completing the drill first.
Coming in second and third, respectively, were Subangdaku, which received P7,000, and Umapad, which won P5,000.
All three winning teams also received trophies and medals.
The four other barangays that participated in the competition each received P2,000 as consolation prize. They were Cabangcalan, Guizo, Cubacub, and Pagsabungan.
Each team had eight to 10 members, who are officers of the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and have been trained in basic life support, fire fighting and other rescue operations.
A member of each team had to put on fire-fighting gear such as the fire suit including boots and helmet, an oxygen tank, a gas mask, and take with them a fire extinguisher. They then ran toward a flaming fire in a barrel and put off the flames.
The rest of the team members carry a spine board, neck brace, splints and other equipment needed to rescue a supposed injured person.
The event was part of the month-long activities of the 46th Charter Day celebration of Mandaue City.
Felix Suico of the Bantay Mandaue Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office said the event was meant to encourage the rescue personnel to enhance their skills.
