Developer Megaworld Corp. broke ground yesterday for a police substation in The Mactan Newtown, its first township outside Metro Manila.
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza said in a message read during Monday’s ceremony that the establishment of a police substation there would boost the city government’s campaign against illegal drugs, increase police visibility and improve emergency response time.
“This outpost will also serve the needs of our tourism stakeholders and protect our tourists and provide security to all who come here for business and leisure,” said City Administrator Teodulo Ybañez who read the mayor’s message.
Radaza said it is fitting to provide The Mactan Newtown a police outpost because it is an emerging center for business and tourism.
Police presence in the area would make the workers, visitors and shoppers safe, she added.
The Mactan Newtown is a 30-hectare integrated urban township that hosts residential condominium towers, business process outsourcing (BPO) office buildings, a La Salle-supervised school, a mall and Mactan Alfresco, a hawker-type dining destination.
The development includes the 11-hectare beach front property formerly known as Portofino Beach Resort.
It will also feature five hotels, including two beach front hotels, and a beach club.
“To Megaworld, rest assured that the City of Lapu-Lapu will always be here to provide you with support particularly in the area of security. We assure you that we will always work with you to keep your locators, tenants, visitors safe and secure,” Radaza said.
