The Cebu City government ordered the demolition of a half-finished bridge across Tejero creek in Barangay Tejero which is said to constrict the flow of the Tejero River.
“Ma-hamper ang flow sa river. Maglisod nata og limpyo sa river tungod sa bridge (The river flow will be hampered and we would find it difficult to clean the river due to the bridge),” said Joel Garganera, chairman of the Reduction and Elimination of Danger Zones (REDZ).
The Cebu City River Management Council endorsed a resolution to stop the construction of the bridge being built by Kakeng Development Corp.
The council’s executive assistant Ely Espina said they learned from the Office Of the Building Official (OBO) that the company failed to secure a permit from the Cebu City Planning and Development Office.
“No building permit from the OBO, only a working permit. The bridge can cause floods and its elevation is low,” Espina said.
He said the company will use the bridge since they will build a warehouse near the area.

Espina said the residents can pass through the bridge in the morning but it will be locked in the evening.
The OBO questioned the construction of the bridge since it violates the three-meter easement zone at Tejero Creek.
The OBO referred the case to the Cebu City Council and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
It said bridges being built by the city or in the city should have a program of works and estimates from the Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW).
Bridges built and funded by other government entities are handled by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The City Legal Office said it will examine the OBO letter to determine what legal action to take on the case.
