Bigger medals, bigger smiles. Participants of the second “Historic Resort City Marathon 2015” on Nov. 15 will receive literally bigger medals depending on the distance that they will complete in the race that will start and finish at the Lapu-Lapu City Hall grounds.
Organized by the Lapu-Lapu City Runners Club (LLRC), the race is the lone marathon event of the city. It will have four distances – the 42k full marathon, 21k half marathon, 10k and 5k and will award specially designed finishers medals whose sizes vary according to the distance a runner joined.
Lulu Valiente, president of LLRC and the event’s lead organizer, said during yesterday’s race launching, that as a runner, she and most avid racers, feel a different kind of satisfaction whenever they get their finishers medals after a grueling race and that the bigger the medal the more fulfilling the feeling. “It’s like a special symbol of a special achievement that’s why we decided to give big finishers medals,” said Valiente.
The 42k finishers will receive five-inch wide medal in antique gold color while 21k finishers will get 3.5 inch medal. The 10k and 5k finishers will receive 2.5 and 1.5-inch medals, respectively.
A total of P50,000 in cash prizes will also be given to the top 10 finishers in each distance while specially designed finishers shirts will be awarded to the 42k and 21k finishers.
The run is supported by the Lapu-Lapu Sports Commission and the Philippine Red Cross Lapu-Lapu Cordova Chapter. It’s co-organizer, the Lapu-Lapu City Association of Hotels and Resort Security Officers (LCHARSO) also promised full support.
The event’s proceeds will be used for LLRC’s charitable activities.
With the theme “I Run For Good Governance” the LLRC also pledged its full support to Mayor Paz Radaza whom it described as a strong advocate of sports and good governance.
“Mayor Paz (Radaza) is very supportive of sports events in the city including the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines. And now that Oponganons have organized their own race, Mayor Paz quickly extended her full support that’s why in return, we support her good governance which transformed our Lapu-Lapu into a Resort and Sports City in the Visayas,” added Valiente.
Valiente was joined by race director Joel Baring of Sports and Fitness Enthusiasts (SAFE) and LLRC officials.
The full marathon will kick off at 12 midnight to help the runners beat the stifling heat and prevent traffic jams along the route while the 21k will start at 2 a.m. The 10k and 5k will unfold at 5 a.m.
Registration fee is P1,500 for the 42k; P1,200 for 21k; P650 for 10k and P550 for 5k inclusive of singlet, finishers medal and post-race refreshments.
More than a hundred runners have already enlisted since registration opened last Sept. 7. It will close on Oct. 31 at the Lapu-Lapu City Hall, Planet Sports Ayala Center Cebu, Pueblo Verde, Tamiya, Beauche International outlets and Infinitea outlet at the City Time Square.
