Cebu City athletes are ready and all revved up to see action in the Philippine National Games (PNG) Visayas Leg slated Nov. 11-14 in Antique. The games will have its opening ceremony on the 10th.
The Cebu City Ninos are expected to arrive in Antique today with swimming coach Rolando Alvarez saying his tankers are well prepared to do battle despite little time to rest after the Cebu City Olympics in which swimming was one of five events which was held in advance.
Alvarez said they are setting a modest harvest of 10 gold medals.
University of Cebu’s (UC) multi-titled swimmer Michael Ichiro Kong leads the Niños’ campaign in the pool along with fellow UC athletes Jeibe Oriesga, Romylin Nina Ignacio, Trina Cañeda, Shane
Allyne Pareja, Elvie Salvo, Bethmay Arellano, Kirsty Carmel Pardo, Michael Ichiro Kong, Jaymark Buslon, Nil Enrico Micarsos, Rafael John Dacaldacal, Matthew Angelo Caneda, Jericho Taal and Fritz Tamara.
The city will also compete in taekwondo, arnis, archery and boxing.
The Luzon qualifier was held last July while the Mindanao competition concluded last September.
According to Commissioner-In-Charge lawyer Jose Luis Gomez, there were 8,439 registered athletes from 494 Local Government Units who saw action in 46 sports events during last year’s national finals.
The National Games is one of the main wellsprings of athletes who will represent the country in international meets such as the Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games and the Olympics.
