The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC), the home of the high and mighty Magis Eagles will host the Mandaue City Division Meet which starts today at its Canduman campus in Mandaue City.
The Magis Eagles topped last year’s meet after winning most of the sporting events. And this year is expected to be no different.
Priscillano Capangpangan, the head coach of the Magis Eagles’ track and field team is confident they will top the two-day competition.
In fact, even before the games officially open, the Eagles already flexed their muscles in three events held in advance yesterday. The Magis Eagles’ vaunted football team topped the secondary division competition as well as its futsal girls secondary team which recently won the title in the girls under-18 of the STC Futsal Cup. SHS-ADC’s archers also hit the bullseye in the secondary boys and girls competition.
Today, the Magis Eagles gun for golds in their traditinal goldmine – the medal-rich swimming and athletics events at the SHS-ADC pool and track oval.
For SHS-AdC athletic director Rico Navarro, winning the Mandaue City Division Meet title is just a bonus. What’s important he said, is for the meet to discover new athletic talents.
“It’s more than just winning the title. Our main goal is to discover talents here in Mandaue City,” said Navarro.
All of the sporting events except taekwondo, volleyball and arnis will be held at the SHS-AdC. Capangpangan and Navarro however, were not able to disclose the venues of the three mentined sporting events that will not be held at the SHS-AdC.
For the past two years, the Magis Eagles have been the core of Mandaue City’s athletic prowess especially in big meets such as the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA).
Next year’s CVIRAA will be hosted by the City of Naga in south Cebu on February.
