Before plunging into action in PCCL, UV to give gifts to less-fortunate kids in Ormoc
The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers are bringing Christmas early for the less-fortunate kids in Ormoc as they give away gifts today, a day before they head to battle in their quest to qualify for the Elite Eight of the 2015 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL).
The Green Lancers of head coach Gary Cortes made their way to Ormoc yesterday and will spend time in Brgy. Tambulilid Linao National High School today to share their blessings.
“I told them that there are kids who are very diligent in school but don’t have supplies because they can’t buy. That’s why we are helping them so that that they will have school supplies,” said Cortes, who steered the Green Lancers to a runner-up finish in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) in his first season at the helm.
“It’s just going to be a simple gift-giving for some less-fortunate children. But you know what’s important? It’s that these supplies came from the pockets of the players themselves. They were the ones who chose what they want to give like school supplies and other useful items so that they can really feel the spirit of gift giving.”
Tomorrow, though, the Green Lancers get down to business and will take on Mindanao qualifier Holy Trinity College Wildcats in the Visayas Islands Qualifying Tournament.
Cortes will welcome back big man Monic Soliva and will parade new recruit, Christian Bolano, the Ormoc leg NBTC MVP of Linao National High School.
They are set to help out mainstays Jun Manzo, Steve Akomo and recent PBA D-League draftee Franz Arong.
The winner of the Visayas Islands competition will advance to the Elite Eight on Dec. 13 in Manila.
Already there are UAAP champions Far Eastern University, NCAA champion Letran, Cesafi ruler University of San Carlos, UAAP and NCAA runners-up, University of Santo Tomas and San Beda and the winner of the Luzon-Metro Manila qualifier.
