Cesafi football: DBTC, SHS-AdC beat high school foes

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Football powerhouses Don Bosco Technical College (DBTC) Greywolves and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles posted separate victories as the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi) Season 26 high school football tournament continued last Sunday, October 4, at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) football pitch.

The Greywolves, perennial champions of the Cesafi high school football tournament, routed the University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu Fighting Maroons, 6-0, while the Magis Eagles blanked the San Carlos School of Cebu (SCSC) Baby Warriors, 2-0.

DBTC quickly seized control against UP Cebu, with Ray Augustine Abuzo and Yuki John Ceniza scoring a goal apiece in the opening minutes to give the Greywolves a 2-0 cushion.

Earl Rey Amistad II then extended DBTC’s lead to 3-0 in the sixth minute before completing a hat trick with goals in the 12th, 35th, and 46th minutes to power the Greywolves to the lopsided victory.

Meanwhile, John James Santos delivered a stellar individual performance for SHS-AdC, scoring both goals in the Magis Eagles’ 2-0 shutout of the Baby Warriors.

Santos found the back of the net in the 50th and 59th minutes to secure the victory for SHS-AdC.

The victory marked DBTC’s third of the season, keeping the Greywolves unbeaten and atop the high school standings with nine points. The Magis Eagles improved to 2-1 with six points, while SCSC and UP Cebu both fell to 0-3.

UP Cebu pulls upset

In the collegiate division, the UP Cebu Fighting Maroons pulled off a major upset by stunning finals contender University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, 1-0.

Jaybe Abasolo emerged as UP Cebu’s hero, scoring the winning goal in the 94th minute of stoppage time to hand the Fighting Maroons their first victory of the season.

The win lifted UP Cebu to 1-1, while USPF slipped to 0-2.

In the other collegiate matchup, defending champions University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors and University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars battled to a 2-2 draw.

USJ-R took the lead through Khalel Benabeye’s 44th-minute goal, but USC quickly responded as Kyle Marlon Giganto equalized in the 46th minute.
