A request to hang banners for the International Eucharistic Congress along the two Mactan-Cebu bridges was approved yesterday.

The request of Cebu Archbihsop Jose Palma was taken up in a meeting of the  Mactan-Cebu Bridge Management Board (MCBMB), where members also appealed to postpone bridge repair work  till after the Sinulog and IEC in January.

The repair would cost P154 million and take 330 days to complete.  It was already postponed from its August schedule due to APEC meetings held in Cebu in September and October.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza moved to ask the Dept. of Public Works and Highways to reset work again till a proper timetable is set and the contractor can hire additional workers to speed up the project.

The meeting at the Capitol was chaired by Gov. Hilario Davide III.

“The DPWH should get approval from the bridge board first, “ said  Engineer Pericles Dakay, vice chairman, who favored the postponement of repair. Mandaue City  made the same appeal earlier after  DPWH 7 said it woud  implement one-way traffic at the old Mactan bridge during its repair.

DPWH lawyer Dean Padoga said the repair work would only start after the agency meets affected city governments of Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue city.

For the hanging of IEC tarps,   City Advertising Ventures Corp., the lone advertising company for the two bridges, has agreed to let IEC organiziers put up promotion banners, said Davide.

“This is a big event like the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit,” said Mayor Radaza.
