Dragons stain Legends’ record

By: Jonas N. Panerio December 22,2015 - 11:37 PM

THE 1993 Dragons smeared the 1985 Legends’ bid for perfection as they handed the defending champions their first loss in a very long while, 64-46, in Division 1 of the University of San Carlos North Alumni Basketball Conference Sinulog Homecoming Cup last weekend at the USC North Campus gym along Mango Avenue.

The Claire Delfin Media-backed Dragons spewed fire and burned the previously-unbeaten Legends with a balanced offensive assault led by Jade Ylanan who had 14 and bull-strong forward Roy Jumao-as who added 12. Noel Lerio also chipped in 11 as the Dragons pushed their unbeaten streak to eight games in this conference while sending the Legends to their first loss in eight outings.

Former pro Lou Regidor led Batch 1985 with 22 points. However, his prolific running mate Bing Pua was held down by the Dragons’ swarming defense and managed a mere six points while going scoreless in the first and fourth periods.

The writing was on the wall early on as the Dragons built a 20-6 lead with lefty big man Bong Eleazar, Ylanan and Jumao-as conspiring to score 14 during that stretch. Regidor tried to rally his troops by scoring nine in the second as the Legends trimmed the deficit to 22-28 at halftime. But that was as close as they got as the Dragons took their game up a notch and outscored the Legends, 36-24, in the final 20 minutes of action to take the win.

Meanwhile in other games in the same division, the 1988 Barakos forged a tie at fourth place with an 87-73 win over the 1987 Bros. Edmund Odulio was on fire all game long and singed the Bros’ defense for 47 points while Alvin Tajanglangit and Bonito Zanoria were on point as well with 12 markers each.

The 1984 Knights also upset the 1992 Little Rascals, 80-79, behind the awesome performances of Clive Monsanto and Jeffrey Diaz who notched 28 and 25 markers, respectively. The Barakos and the Little Rascals are now tied at 5-4 (win-loss), the Knights improved to 3-6 while the Bros dropped to 2-6.
