NATIONAL Master (NM) Rogelio Enriquez prevented back-to-back champion Jimmy Ty from completing a grand slam in Group A of last Sunday’s Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) Grand Finals held at the Handuraw Pizza Restaurant Gorordo.

NM Enriquez finished the final four knockout round with a win against Ty via a 36 Sicilian move defense.

Ty finished second to NM Enriquez after losing to the latter in the knockout round.

Claiming the third spot was Peterson Sia followed by NM Arnold Cadiz at fourth place.

NM Cadiz bowed down to Sia in their duel in the knockout round via 29 French defense moves.

No less than Former Cebu City Mayor Alvin Garcia and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama handed the trophy to NM Enriquez along with CEPCA President Engr. Jerry Maratas and CEPCA officials.

Meanwhile, Michael Tinga emerged as the best woodpusher for Group B after finishing off the tournament with 7.5 points.

Tinga capped off his campaign with a draw over Ruel Hortelano after 40 Ruy Lopez moves.

Second to Tinga in the standings was Romulo Pialan with six points while both Jun Kidlat and Michael Bentulan finished at third with four points.

In the All-CEPCAN members’ tournament, Zelberstein Torres gathered a total of four points along with second-placer KC Morala and third-placer Laila Nadera.

Torres, however, accumulated the bigger tie-break points with 15 while Morala had 12.5 points and Nadera tallied 11.5 points to emerge as the champion in the division.

Joe Atillo finished at fourth place with 3.5 points and tied with John Francis Balbona but the former finished off with bigger tie-break points compared to the latter.

Balbona’s father, Felix passed away last Sunday after he suffered a heart attack in the middle of the third round in Group B of the tournament.

The mentioned winning woodpushers received cash prizes and trophies from CEPCA.
