Opon-Carillo wins Sinulog badminton under-17 class title

The tandem of Trisha Opon and Elloise Canillo and the pair of Joel Barriga Jr. and Shane Boloron emerged champions in the Under-17 Age Group category of the Sinulog Open Badminton Cup last Saturday night at the Metrosports Center in Lahug.

Opon and Canillo waylaid Andrea Aguillon and Sharlene Tan, 21-4, 21-4, in the Girls Doubles final while Barriga and Boloron trounced Brian and Demi Mancao, 21-8, 21-7 in the Mixed Doubles event.

The tournament, also dubbed as the Sinulog Bunal og Kusog Cup, was supposed to be a two-day event but its Adult Category games were moved to this coming Saturday for lack of registered participants, organizer Lerma Aguillon said.

Boloron also topped the U-15 Girls Doubles category with partner Daisy Preglo as the duo crushed Ezrah Cayatas and Cielo Carlawan, 21-10, 21-7.

Despite losing in his U-17 title match, Brian Mancao and his partner Haniff Sumalipao defeated Gonz Jelord and Rhys Tejano, 21-4, 21-4, to rule the U-15 Boys Doubles category. Joseph Babad and Almary Ybanez also won the same age category’s Mixed Doubles final against the duo of Jhaun Mimar and Samantha Dela Cruz, 21-11, 21-17.

Meanwhile in the U-13 championship games, Karyll Rio and Zenah Bejasa routed Yessa Villahermosa and Joan Israel, 21-4, 21-1, in Girls Doubles while Allen Penute and Carl Canillo bested the pair of Bonn Yangan and Raymond Jaca in the Boys Doubles, 21-7, 21-4.

Canillo then teamed up with Bejasa to win the Mixed Doubles crown by overpowering Ric Layasan and Shallonah Felices, 21-7, 21-12.
Penute also won two golds in the U-11 class.

He teamed up with Shandy Segundine to nip the pair of Matt Bisnar and James Capin, 21-15, 21-18, in the Boys Doubles and helped Rio rule over Mark Agullan and Aleyan Limosnero, 21-5, 21-9, in the Mixed Doubles final.

Rio and partner Eve Bejasa on the other hand, lost to Margarette Jacalan and Laura Lumapgid in the Girls Doubles title match, 21-14, 21-12.
