Malacañang upholds order stopping med school’s closure

The Office of the President has upheld its order stopping the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) from closing Southwestern University (SWU) – College of Medicine.

Dr. Chito Salazar, SWU chairman and president, said Malacañang denied CHEd’s motion for reconsideration in an order dated January 2.

“Our students have to be given the documents they deserve. Our foreign students need to get their certificates of eligibility, and the refusal of CHEd to do this is prejudicial against the students and in violation of the orders of the Office of the President,” he told reporters in a press conference Tuesday.

Phinma insists that SWU has the right to operate a college of medicine.

Phinma took over management of the university in May 2015, after acquiring majority stake in the Aznar-founded institution.
