A group of mourners heading home after attending a funeral ended up losing three of their companions in an accident along a mountain village in the town of Alegria in southern Cebu province on Monday, police said.
The three fatalities and the 15 others who were injured were riding a multicab vehicle that apparently went out of control as it was travelling down a descending road along Sitio Banahaw in Barangay Valencia, about 8 kilometers away from the town proper of Alegria, said Police Officer 1 Carmelito Dacula, desk officer of the Alegria police, in a phone interview Monday.
He said the incident happened sometime around three this afternoon but it took a while for the police to be informed of the accident and sent a rescue team to the area.
He said rescuers brought the still unnamed fatalities and the injured to the district hospital in the nearby Badian town.
Dacula said their initial investigation showed that the victims just came from burying a relative and were heading home to Badian when the brake system of the multicab they were riding malfunction, causing it to careen down the unpaved road before it toppled over
