PHILIPPINE Games and Amusements Board super flyweight champion Jonas “Zorro” Sultan defeated Japanese Tatsuya Ikemizu via knockout in their non-title super-flyweight showdown last Sunday at the Towa Pharmaceutical Ractab Dome in Kadoma, Osaka, Japan.
Sultan of the famed ALA Boxing Gym in Cebu emerged triumphant after landing an overhand right to the head of the bigger Japanese. The bout ended at the 2:37 mark of the second round.
The 24-year-old Zamboanga del Norte-native who is now based in Cebu, improved his record to 10-3-0 (win-loss-draw) with six knockout victories. Ikemizu dropped to 13-2-0 with seven knockouts.
Joining Sultan in his fight in Japan was a familiar face in ALA Boxing Gym, former Philippine super-flyweight champion Melvin “Top Gun” Gumban.
Gumban retired last year and decided to take his boxing knowledge to Japan, where he eventually became a trainer. Gumban was joined by ALA Boxing Gym trainer Robert Eturma.
Sultan clinched the Philippine super-flyweight title last year when he defeated Gumban’s tormentor Rene Daquel via unanimous decision in Manila.
His most recent bout ended in a unanimous decision loss to Japanese Go Onaga in Okinawa, Japan last year.
Ikemizu is familiar with Filipino foes. He defeated Sultan’s stablemate Mark John Yap last year by unanimous decision in Osaka.
