A PROFESSOR has filed a case against the president of Cebu Normal University (CNU) for allegedly no longer giving him and about 20 other teachers any teaching load.
In his complaint filed before the Cebu City Prosecutors’ Office, Dr. Marcelo Bacalso alleged that Dr. Marcelo Lopez, CNU president, claimed that those who had retired from government service should no longer be allowed to teach as reportedly instructed by the Civil Service Commission (CSC).
Cebu Daily News called the Cebu Normal University to get Lopez’s side, but a staff said that the CNU president can’t be reached for comment because he’s in Manila.
Bacalso used to serve as schools division superintendent of the Department of Education in Central Visayas. He retired in 1993.
He was employed as guest lecturer in CNU’s graduate school in education from 1993 to March 2016.
Bacalso, also a lawyer, said that he could not understand why he and the other retired professors were no longer given any teaching load when they are protected by the Labor Code of the Philippines.
He said even Republic Act 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 grants them benefits and privileges.
“The law states that retirees could still teach so long as they have the experience and expertise in the subject they’re teaching,” Bacalso explained.
When he was teaching at CNU, he said he was always rated “very satisfactory” and even “outstanding” seven times in their evaluation.
