The death of Jeffrey “Jaguar” Diaz, tagged as Cebu City’s number one drug lord has closed an opportunity to get information on the so-called “drug protectors”.
Outgoing Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said the possibility that Jaguar may have been protected by “men in uniform,” cannot be denied.
“Sayang. I would have wanted him not dead. I would have wanted him alive. So then he can be telling the truth,” he said.
Incoming Cebu City councilor, Tinago Barangay Captain Joel Garganera agreed with Rama saying Jaguar could not have survived this far if he did not enjoy police protection.
Even Police Regional Director, Chief Supt. Patrocinio Comendador had earlier admitted that Jaguar had police protectors not only in Central Visayas but in other regions as well. They are still currently investigating the matter and would not disclose any other information.
Rama recalled that under his watch, the last time the Cebu City Intelligence Branch (CIB) conducted raid at Jaguar’s home at Barangay Duljo Fatima, was in September last year but Jaguar managed to escape.
He said during the investigation, it was shown that someone leaked the information about where the police would conduct a raid in Duljo, Fatima.
Rama said he was delighted upon hearing news that Jaguar wanted to surrender because Jaguar would be of great help in identifying illegal drug traders in the city.
He said the rules of engagement should have been observed, and Jaguar would not have been killed because Jaguar would definitely squeal on his drug protectors.
A netizen responded to Garganera’s post on Facebook saying “Piyaet must die (Squealers must die.)”
For his part, Garganera said, “Why silence him when he’s about to turn himself in. I saw this movie before, its called ‘Omerta’ or ‘Dead man tells no tales.’” he said.
Garganera believes an investigation “will open a can of worms.”
