A 38-year-old enlisted man of the Philippine Navy was shot dead outside a pension house in barangay Poblacion in Lapu-Lapu City.
Police said Petty Officer 2 Edwin Liyogan was supposed to meet a woman when he was shot outside Mactan Inn past 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The victim was a resident of Kamuning district in Quezon City and was part of the augmentation group from Davao City that was sent to the Cebu-based Naval Forces Central.
Police said before he was shot, Liyogan was inside the pension house. He stepped out and was checking his cell phone when a lone gunman appeared and fired at him.
The assailant, who was wearing a hoodie, tried to fire more shots, but the gun jammed. The gunman casually walked away from the crime scene.
Based on the messages in his cell phone, the victim was supposed to meet a certain Jencev in the pension house.
Police theorized that the incident was a case of an illicit relationship gone awry.
Investigators said it is possible that the gunman was using Jencey’s phone in sending text messages to the navyman to lure him out of the pension house. Police are still digging deeper into the case to find leads on the identity of the gunman and the motive behind the killing.
