After a four-year drought, the Philippines came out on top anew as they regained the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation (WEKAF) World Championships yesterday at the Convention Hall of JCentre Mall in Mandaue City.
The Nationals who last won the title in 2012 ended the tournament with 67 gold medals, 65 silvers and 50 bronzes to dethrone the US which collected 41 golds, 29 silvers and 34 bronzes.
National team head coach Cesario Perez said he is more than grateful that his team exceeded his own expectations.
“Before the tournament, I already knew that the Philippines has the chance to win. Wala gyod og nasayang nga entries sa division (there were no entries wasted in the division),” Perez said.
Completing the top 10 were Japan (22-12-15), Australia (12-5-13), Canada (10-10-11), Hungary (8-6-11), Reunion Island (6-11-13), Italy (3-3-5), United Kingdom (2-5-8) and Liechtenstein (1-3-3).
