LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Seven tropical cyclone names used in 2025 have been permanently removed from the country’s naming roster after the storms caused widespread deaths and billions in damage, the state weather bureau announced.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the decommissioned names are Crising, Emong, Mirasol, Nando, Opong, Tino, and Uwan.

Guidelines to remove from list

Under current guidelines, a storm name is removed if it leads to at least 300 deaths or causes damage reaching P1 billion, based on official assessments.

The agency cited data from the Office of Civil Defense, which reported that the seven cyclones caused a combined 373 fatalities, 680 injuries, and 132 missing persons.

Damage to agriculture, infrastructure, and other assets from these weather systems exceeded P36 billion, according to the same report.

Pagasa said the scale and impact of the disasters met the criteria for permanently retiring the names.

Replacement names

Replacement names—Chico, Elias, Magyawan, Nilad, Omar, Tala, and Urbano—will be added to the roster starting in 2029.
