CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Cebu Greats will be without veteran guard Brian Heruela after the Mindoro Tamaraws officially secured his services in the ongoing Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL).

Mindoro confirmed the acquisition through a Facebook post over the weekend, with team owner and Mindoro Mayor Jennifer Cruz and head coach Edgar Macaraya personally welcoming Heruela during the formal contract signing.

Heruela, one of the most notable additions to Cebu’s roster this season, quickly became a key figure in the team’s backcourt. Known for his leadership and composure as a floor general, he provided an immediate boost to Cebu’s offensive rhythm.

The former University of Cebu standout and PBA guard appeared in nine games for the Greats, playing a crucial role in their strong start this season. He averaged 7.3 points, 6.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.1 steals in 23 minutes per game, taking on primary playmaking duties especially during the absence of Jun Manzo.

Cebu currently holds an 8–3 win-loss record, sitting seventh in the team standings, while Mindoro remains in 15th place with a 5–5 slate.

Heruela did not suit up in Cebu’s last two outings, where the team split its assignments with a win and a loss.

With his departure, Cebu will lean heavily on Manzo to anchor the point guard duties once again after returning from a lengthy absence and helping the team secure a win over Valenzuela on June 4. The loss of Heruela leaves a noticeable gap in Cebu’s backcourt stability.

For Mindoro, however, Heruela’s arrival is seen as a significant boost. His experience and leadership are expected to complement the scoring core of Bambam Gamalinda, JC Recto, and Marion Magat as the Tamaraws look to improve their standing in the tournament.
