CEBU CITY, Philippines — More than a hundred woodpushers are expected to battle for supremacy in the Jun Olis Memorial Open Chess Tournament on Sunday, June 14, at Mahi Central Mall in Lapu-Lapu City.

The event is co-organized by Cebu’s biggest and longest-running chess groups: the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA), Cebu School of Chess, and Bankal Chess Club.

The tournament honors the late Apolonio “Jun” C. Olis Jr., a respected CEPCA member known for his deep passion for chess and his key role in organizing tournaments.

Olis passed away in 2023 at the age of 67. He was widely recognized as the man behind the technical operations of many Cepca tournaments. A native of Tanjay City, Negros Oriental, he was among Cepca’s early members when it was founded in 1990 by the late Boy Pestaño, Art Ynclino, and Alex Tolentino.

He later rose through the ranks of the Cebu chess community and served as Cepca president in 2005. Beyond his stint as president, Olis remained active as a dedicated organizer, helping shape and strengthen the group’s reputation in both local and national competitions.

Winners will receive cash prizes from champion down to 15th place. The champion will take home 4,500, along with a trophy and medal. The second placer will receive 3,500, while the third will get 2,500.
