Bantayan electric co-op buys generator for power reserve

THE Bantayan Electric Cooperative (Banelco), together with Bantayan Island Power Corporation, will purchase a three-megawatt generator set next week from China for additional power reserve in Bantayan Island.

Bantayan Island has been experiencing power interruptions due to lack of power reserve and after some its generator sets encountered problems.

Engr. Lee Rivera, general manager of Banelco, said in a phone interview yesterday that power interruptions were sometimes caused by higher peak electrical load.

The total installed capacity for the whole island is 8.5 megawatts, while its peak load is around 5.2 megawatts.

Rivera said they also need to submit documents to the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) for the additional power load.

There is no final word yet as to whether the consumers will pay additional cost once the new generator set becomes operational.

Rivera said the generator is set to arrive before the year ends. The generator set might be operational by the first quarter of 2017.
