SEE YOU AT THE BIG CROSS

Mixed reactions came from the netizens after authorities announced there will be “zero signal” for mobile phones and other wireless gadgets in Cebu City during today’s fluvial and foot processions and in tomorrow’s Sinulog Grand Parade. Some were angry, especially those who are going out to watch the grand parade and used to the convenience of the mobile phone service. But there also those who favor the shutdown of cell sites, as they believed authorities know what they are doing.

After the police advised the Sinulog spectators to prearrange their meeting places and time since they cannot communicate by phone, some netizens jokingly said they told each other that if they find themselves lost while taking part in the Sinulog events, “Magkita na lang ta sa dakong krus.”

(This Cebuano idiom refers to a meet-up at the big cross inside cemeteries if they get lost in the large crowd who visit their departed during All Souls’ Day celebration. In this case, the big cross refers to is the historic Magellan Cross beside the Basilica del Sto. Niño.)
