SWU rebounds, earns 2 wins in Shakey’s volley
After their shocking 25-11, 25-15 loss to the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) on Monday, the whole Southwestern University (SWU) squad did not immediately leave the court. They stayed for over five minutes as Cobras head coach Roy Ulan cited his wards’ lack of chemistry inside the court as the reason for that setback.
Yesterday, Ulan’s pep talk seemingly paid off as the reigning champions scored a pair of victories to climb to third spot in Group A of the 15th Shakey’s Girls Volleyball League-Central Visayas leg at the Lux Oriens Gym of the Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-ADC) in Canduman, Mandaue.
The Cobras, winners of last year’s edition, handed erstwhile unbeaten Abellana National School it’s first loss in three games with a 25-11, 25-21 triumph before pulling off the most dominant win of the tournament, a 25-5, 25-8 thumping of Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion (CIC) to improve to 2-1 (win-loss) behind USPF and University of Bohol’s (UB) clean 2-0 (win-loss) cards.
“I think the reason we lost against USPF is because of the lack of teamwork,” said Ulan who is hoping to make it back-to-back after winning the crown in his rookie season last year.
SWU made up for their lack of court awareness last Monday by tightening up their defense allowing CIC to score just 13 points which is the lowest output of any team so far.
Also in Group A, the visiting UB team from Tagbilaran, Bohol scored victories against CIC (25-14, 25-22) and Paref Southcrest (25-11, 25-14).
In Group B action, the University of San Carlos bounced back from their opening day loss to SHS-ADC by outlasting the University of Cebu (UC) 25-10, 20-25, 25-21 while the University of San Jose-Recoletos registered its second win in as many games after dumping UC 25-12, 25-9.
