A lone Cebuano was awarded by the Philippine National Red Cross with a Doña Aurora Aragon Quezon Award during its 32nd Biennial National Convention at the Manila Hotel last April 11-13.

The Aurora Aragon Quezon Award was given to Dr. Mario Y. Amores in recognition of his outstanding 10 years of service to Red Cross.

During his term as councilor of Lapu-Lapu City in 2006, Amores endorsed to the city council the idea of creating a Red Cross Chapter on the island of Mactan.

On January 14, 2008, the national headquarters approved the request of the Lapu-Lapu City government, thus giving birth to the second Red Cross Chapter in Cebu province.

Through his leadership, the Chapter received the Chapter of the Year to Classification D in 2016.

He was treasurer of the Board of Directors in 2008, vice-chairman in 2014 and chairman of the Board of Directors in 2017.

The Red Cross medal honors the memory of the late Doña Aragon Quezon who, in selflessness and devotion to the duty as first chairman of the Independent Philippine Red Cross, personified the true spirit of Red Cross volunteer service.

The medal is a restricted award presented by the Board of Governors of the Philippine Red Cross only to volunteers who have exceptional dedication to the cause of the Philippine Red Cross.

Amores was among the several awardees from the different parts of the country during the convention.

He was accompanied by eight other delegates from the Red Cross Lapu-Lapu/Cordova Chapter including Chapter Vice-Chairman Cordova Mayor Mary Therese Sitoy-Cho and Chapter Administrator Vic Jay Gonzal.
