CEBU CITY, Philippines — Mayors in Cebu province pledged cash aid to victims in northern Luzon where Typhoon Ulysses (international name: Vamco) laid waste last week.
In a press statement issued on Monday, November 16, the League of Municipalities of the Philippines – Cebu (LMP-Cebu) announced they would be providing financial assistance worth P500,000 to residents affected by Ulysses’ onslaught in Cagayan Valley.
“We are sending the P500,000 in financial assistance as a sign of solidarity with our fellow Mayors and our brothers and sisters in Cagayan,” LMP-Cebu President and Liloan Mayor Christina Frasco was quoted.
Frasco said the 44 town mayors in Cebu province made a consensus to send help to northern Luzon.
“During this time of immeasurable suffering, may the Cebuanos’ compassion and empathy for our fellow Filipinos be a beacon of hope that together, we shall rise again,” she added.
Ulysses, the 21st typhoon to hit the country this year, triggered massive flooding in Metro Manila and many other parts of Luzon, particularly the provinces of Cagayan and Isabela.
As of 9 a.m. Sunday (November 15), Ulysses has so far left 22 people dead in Cagayan Valley, two in Central Luzon, 17 in the Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) region, eight in the Bicol region, 10 in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and eight in Metro Manila. /dbs
