CEBU CITY, Philippines — Cebu City Acting Mayor Michael Rama said he agreed with President Rodrigo Duterte that face shields should now be used only in a hospital setting.

He further added that should the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) would order that face shields would no longer be required when going outside and into non-medical establishments, Cebu City would immediately adopt it.

Rama said that face shields had become a mere compliance object for people and the majority of the public had not actually use the face shields for their purpose.

“Daghan ang wala kasabot. Ang face shield himoon rag headband. Mao nay nahitabo sa face shield, honored in the breach than in the compliance,” said the acting mayor.

(Many did not understand. They use the face shield into a headband. That is what happened to the face shield honored in the breach than in the compliance.

Many of the public are often seen using face shields as headbands instead of their proper use over the face, and even if establishments strictly implement the wearing of face shields upon entry, customers still take it off when inside the establishment.

Rama said the use of face shields was clearly no longer useful for the public and should be revisited.

“Very noble move. Very practical move. I commend the President,” said the acting mayor.

Senate President Vicente Sotto III posted on his social media that President Duterte was already considering the removal of face shields as requirements for people going out.

Sotto said that the President said he would tell the Department of Health (DOH) to stop requiring people to wear face shields outside of the hospital setting.

However, Rama said that even if face shields would be out of the picture, the public must still wear their masks and follow the health protocols properly.
