Cebu Daily News cited for environment news coverage in 888 News Forum

Cebu Daily News was awarded together with four other persons and organization for its news stories on the environment during the 888 News Forum’s 8th anniversary at the Marco Polo Hotel this morning.

“In recognition of its remarkable investigative news stories in relation to being a consistent advocate for the protection of the Environment and keeping its readers up to date on key issues regarding climate change and global warming that affects our country’s economy and development,” read the citation of CDN’s plaque.

Cebu Daily News Publisher and Acting Editor-in-Chief Eileen Mangubat was onhand to receive the award. Mangubat pointed out the paper’s inherent respect to the environmemt.

“We plan to look at it as more than just stories. We would also like to confirm and repeat our commitment to stories that call attention for respect for the environment and out home, we’ll continue,” she said during her acceptance speech.


Individual awardees were Armi Lopez Garcia, consul for the Russian Federation and chairperson of the Cebu Consular Corps for facilitating sisterhood agreements between Cebu province and the Vladimir Region of Russia; and Gordon Alan Joseph, president of the Cebu Business Club for establishing a coalition of 14 major business organizations to identify and lobby for infrastructure, development requirements and opportunities.

Two organizations were also awarded – the Visayan Electric Company (Veco) and Marco Polo Plaza Hotel.

Veco was recognized for its exemplary performance in preventing power outages in Cebu City by buying power generated by business establishments when supply is low against demand and for promoting solar energy, a clean renewable energy.

Marco Polo was recognized for its support in hosting the 888 News Forums every Tuesdays in the hotel.

In its early years, hosting of the 888 News Forum was rotated among Cebu’s big hotels starting from Parklane and Marco Polo in 2007, Waterfront Hotel-Lahug in 2008. Starting 2009, Marco Polo called back the News Forum and offered to be the permanent venue.

CDN’s Mangubat was among the core group that started the 888 News Forum. She, together with Jenny Franco of the travel sector, CDN columnist Malou Guanzon-Apalisok and Ricky Poca of the University of San Carlos became the 888 Board of Trustees which is chaired by Consul General Bobby Lim Joseph.
