Cebu Daily News emerged as the most awarded publication in the 2013 Civic Journalism Awards of the Philippine Press Institute (PPI), besting the other finalists in three categories.
CDN won Best Editorial Page, Best in Photojournalism, and the Coke Bayanihan Award for Best Reporting on Disasters.
In accepting the Best in Disaster Reporting award, Eileen G. Mangubat, publisher and acting editor-in-chief of Cebu Daily News said, “Visayas was walloped back-to-back with two disasters and I think that it is very heroic for all my peers not only in the paper, but with other papers in the Visayas to really strive not to just be victims of a calamity but to report what is going on in other parts of the Visayas and in our own hometown.
It is very heroic just to put out a paper at a time like that and I’d like to commend my colleagues in the Visayas who struggled and made sure the paper would come out.”
The PPI announced last night the winners of the 2013 Civic Journalism Awards, an annual competition that aims to recognize outstanding journalism among community newspapers across the country.
In his speech President Fidel V. Ramos acknowledged the PPI for “boldly facing various challenges that confront the media today.”
“Upholding press freedom and upgrading PPI members’ journalistic skills is a never ending task,” Ramos said as PPI celebrates its 50th year.
Two newspapers from Mindanao, Edge Davao and SunStar Davao, were declared Best Community Newspaper and Best in Environmental Reporting, respectively. The lone winner from Luzon, Sun.Star Baguio, was deemed the Best in Culture, Arts, and History Reporting.
The other finalists were Sun.Star Cebu, Mindanao Gold Star Daily in the daily division; and Mabuhay and Metro Post in the weekly division.
In weekly division, Baguio Midland Courier and Baguio Chronicle each won in two categories under the weekly newspaper division. The former was adjudged the Best Edited Community Newspaper and the Best Editorial Page while the latter won the Best in Environmental Reporting and Best in Photojournalism awards.
In the same division two newspapers in Mindanao – BusinessWeek Mindanao and The Mindanao Cross – emerged as the Best in Business and Economic Reporting and the Best in Culture, Arts and History Reporting, respectively. The Bohol Chronicle, the lone winner from the Visayas in the same division, received the Coke Bayanihan Award for Best Reporting on Disasters, a special recognition added to this year’s list of awards for the first time.
Winners received trophies and cash prizes. Plaques of Merit were handed out to all the finalists.
The awarding was one of the highlights of PPI’s two-day 50th anniversary celebration, which opened on May 1 at the Traders Hotel Manila. It also coincided with PPI’s annual membership forum and general assembly.
