CEBU CITY, Philippines — The detainee, who reportedly escaped from his police escorts inside a mobile patrol car on Thursday noon, died after he reportedly fought back against responding police during the manhunt operation conducted in the vicinity of Ludo Cemetery in Barangay Carreta, Cebu City, shortly before 10:00 p.m., August 12.

Police Major Renz Talosig, Mabolo Police Station chief, identified the detainee as Noeh Niez, who was first arrested for illegal drugs on July 16,  and later on admitted to the media as the alleged perpetrator of shooting a construction worker, Jenrey Sanico, last July 13.

Niez, who was interviewed by CDN Digital last July 23, admitted that he allegedly killed Sanico for ‘inappropriate responses’ made by the latter. Sanico at that time said that he forgot what his question was but he added that he felt bad with Sanico’s responses, which allegedly prompted him to shoot Sanico.

Niez also said that he blamed himself for the incident, and hoped that the family would accept his apologies for the incident.

Talosig said that they had conducted follow up operations against Niez immediately after he escaped from inside the mobile patrol unit in Sitio Upper Carreta, after he had his medical checkup at the Regional Crime Laboratory in Sudlon, Barangay Lahug in Cebu City.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Wilbert Parilla, deputy director for operations of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), said that police were usually given at least 24 hours to find Niez.

He said should the police fail to find Niez within the given time, the two policemen, who were with Niez at that time, would face administrative cases.

He said that both were still restricted pending their investigation.

Talosig, further, said that during their operation, the operating team received information from concerned residents.

As they went to the area, Niez reportedly noticed them and attempted to elude arrest. However, police managed to hold him, but Niez freed himself and tried to pull-out a firearm prompting police to shoot Niez first.

Talosig said none of the police were injured.

Niez, on the other hand, was wounded on the neck after police shot him resulting to his death.

Police recovered a black widow revolver caliber 9 mm with two bullets and two fired cartridges from Niez.

The firearm and the ammunition are now subject for ballistic examination.
