CEBU CITY, Philippines – It is going to be another fight between the Martinezes and Salimbangons for the 2022 Congressional race in Cebu’s 4th district.
Incumbent 4th District Representative Janice Salimbangon will be facing Celestino “Tining” Martinez III, who filed his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) on Wednesday, October 6, 2021.
Janice is the wife of the late Congressman Benhur Salimbangon while Tining is the son of Celestino “Junie” Martinez Jr., Janice’s former opponent in the 2019 elections. The former won against Junie by a margin of 33,089 votes.
Janice is seeking reelection under One Cebu and National Unity Party (NUP). She filed her COC on Tuesday, October 5.
She first stepped into politics in 2019 to replace her husband, the late Congressman Benhur Salimbangon, whose term ended that same year.
On the other hand, Tining, who is currently the President of Association of Barangay Councils – Cebu Federation (ABC-Cebu), belongs to Partido Pilipino sa Pagbabago (PPP), the political party, where gubernatorial aspirant and former Tourism Sec. Ace Durano belongs.
This is not the first time Tining will be vying for a seat in the House of Representatives.
It can be recalled that in 2007, he ran against Benhur.
The two faced again during the 2010 Presidential elections. The tension between the two political clans, at that time, also reached a point wherein Cebu’s 4th district became part of the country’s election hotspots. A standoff also occurred between the supporters and members of both families.
The National Elections will be held on May 9, 2022.
