SETTLERS occupying the Mandaue City side of Mahiga Creek in sitio Mahayag, barangay Subangdaku were warned yesterday to leave the area or be evicted.
“They should vacate the area because they are in a danger zone especially with the rains,” said Tony Pet Juanico, chief of Mandaue City Hall’s Housing and Development Office (HUDO).
The occupants filed for an injunction in court seeking a halt in the demolition of their homes. Juanico said his office is only waiting for confirmation of police assistance for the demolition.
The occupants were part of 1,200 beneficiaries of the city’s 6.5 hectare housing project but they refused to leave their homes near the Mahiga Creek.
“They are assured of security of tenure in the relocation site,” Juanico said.
Last Saturday, 161 cluster beneficiaries of Mandaue City Hall’s 6.5 hectare housing project attended a workshop organized by HUDO.
Juanico said they asked them to agree on a common design for their homes which will occupy 28 square meters and have three rooms and toilets .
The beneficiaries of the 6.5 hectare lot in barangay Paknaan were residents of Mandaue danger zones like the Butuanon river. The lot costs P80,000 and the house cost P170,000.
They will pay for both house and lot over a period of 25 years in installments of P1,815 a month.
Juanico said the city government wants to relocate all 1,200 families from danger zones by December this year.
Another condominium will be built by the Mandaue City government in barangay Looc, Mandaue City for 2,800 occupants by next year.
There are 4,000 families living in danger zones based on HUDO’s census.
