Work on Mahiga river easement starts

August 15,2014 - 07:30 AM

CIVIL works started yesterday on a P6 million embankment project along parts of Mahiga Creek in Cebu City.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama led the groundbreaking of the 160-meter project at Block 27 in the North Reclamation Area.

A five-meter easement will be established in the riverbank at the bridge near the Cebu International Port (CIP).

A 10-meter road will be paved beside it. Lampposts and ornamental plants will be put up later.

“The contractor started working on the embankment project immediately . Despite the delay, this project will be a model for what we want to do to the rest of the rivers in Cebu City,“ said Joey Daluz III who heads the Reduction of Danger Zones (REDZ) task force.

Daluz said he will ask Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes to start improving the opposite side of Mahiga Creek which falls under Mandaue City.

He said the Cebu City government is open to spending for the clearing of the opposite embankment.
