Mahiga Creek study to be bidded out next month

A P3 MILLION project to survey and create a master plan for the Mahiga River will be bidded out next month.

Jose Daluz III, who heads the Cebu City Rivers Management Council (CCRMC), said the project will cover the portion from the river’s mouth near the Cebu International Port (CIP) up to M.J. Cuenco Ave.

“I’ve already discussed it with the council and they’re okay with it. It’s difficult for us without a guide,” said Daluz, who also chairs the Bids and Awards Committee (BAC).

He said the study and master plan will contain the technical details of the river like its topographic maps, hydrologics, hydrographics or measurements and physical descriptions.

The study will also mention the properties that Cebu City may need to purchase or negotiate with in order to improve the river’s waterway and the specifics on residential and business structures that encroach on the river’s three-meter easement zone.

Detailed

“I think that would be a major accomplishment of the REDZ Program to get master-planning of the Mahiga, as a start,” Daluz added.

After the project is awarded, the winning contractor will be given two months to conduct the study.

An earlier survey was conducted by CCRMC staff on the whole stretch of the Mahiga River which led the council to identify several businesses encroaching on waterways.

Seven commercial establishments were issued notices of violation earlier this month.

But Daluz said the river study project is much more detailed and can guide them in clearing the city’s waterways.
