Over 5,000 elderly residents of Mandaue City’s 27 barangays kicked off the 18th National Elderly Filipino Week observance by dancing to their favorite pop and folk tunes at the City Sports and Cultural Complex yesterday.
“You (the Senior Citizens) are the greatest generation kay nataguyod ninyo ang inyong mga pamilya bisan sa tumang kalisud (because you raised your families despite hardship),” Mayor Jonas Cortes said in his welcome address.
The mayor awarded three centenarians from barangays Casuntingan and Subangdaku with plaques of recognition and P50,000 cash each.
The oldest, 106 year-old Dolores Ranili Ermac of barangay Casuntingan received her cash and plaque despite being bed-ridden.
The eldest woman in barangay Subangdaku, 100 year-old Cristita Velasquez del Mar, was being taken care of by her son, Mading del Mar.
The third centenarian, 100-year-old businessman Serapio Lumapas, received the award with his daughter. Cortes said they plan to distribute medical kits to each senior citizen in the city.
“Malipayon kaayo ko at least aduna mi panahon nga mupasundayag ug mukatawa (I am happy that at least we have a chance to celebrate and be happy),” said grandmother Pacensia Plaza of barangay Jagobiao.
A gate-ball and basketball tournament will also be held for the seniors.
