Strong finish for Niños in Batang Pinoy meet

The Cebu City Niños got more golds from boxing and dancesports in yesterday’s final day of action in the Batang Pinoy 2014 Visayas Qualifying Leg in Kalibo, Aklan.

The Cebu City boxing team added three gold medals, a silver and two bronze medals at the Malinao Covered Court.

The Dancesports Team Cebu City, for its part, bagged all the 11 gold medals at stake in the competition to go with 10 silvers and six bronze medals.

The medal haul in boxing and dancesports is expected to lift Cebu City’s overall standing in this multi-sporting meet.

Cebu City team officials, though, have yet to give the total tally pending results of other sporting events.

Winning golds for the Cebuanos in the kiddies division boxing are Eduardo Jimenez and Jefre Jimenez while Joe Paul John Tanudra secured the gilt in the secondary boys’ light paperweight division. Contributing bronze medals to Cebu City for the boys of head boxing coach Amad Almerino and assistant coach Jordan Dopalco are Limbert Cainap and Adrian Rosal.

Meanwhile, Cebu Province made up for its dismal showing in other sporting events by ruling karatedo.

The Cebu Province karatekas, bannered by the mighty University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Fighting Jaguars, increased their total gold-silver-bronze tally to 15-7-6 to bag the overall championship title.

Lady Jaguar DJ Mae Dente and Gerald Baclaan, led Cebu Province’s gold medal haul after they bagged two gold medals apiece in their respective divisions at the KPES Covered Court in Kalibo.

Dente topped the girls’ kata competition and won the 53-kilogram Kumite crown, while Baclaan pocketed two gold medals in the boy’s Kumite and Kata events.

The Cebu City team, represented by some USJ-R karatekas, finished second overall with a tally of 7-7-10 followed by Bacolod City at third with 7-6-10.
