CEBU CITY, Philippines – No less than seven landslides hit the hinterland villages of Cebu City over the weekend, resulting in the displacement of at least 80 individuals, authorities confirmed.
Raquel Arce, head of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CCDRRMO), said around 20 families, or 80 individuals, have been subjected to forced evacuation due to the series of landslides that occurred last Saturday, August 13, and Sunday, August 14.
The incidents were still due to the heavy rains that Cebu experienced since the first week of August, said Arce.
“Fortunately, no one got harmed or injured,” Arce told reporters in a teleconference on Monday, August 15.
The CCDRRMO recorded seven landslides from four mountain villages – Barangays Pamutan, Pit-os, Buhisan, and Kalunasan.
Arce also said the evacuated families came from Barangays Kalunasan and Pit-os, and all of them were still staying in a designated barangay gym.
“Sa pagkakarun, (dili pa sila kabalik sa ilahang mga balay) kay ang weather condition, mukalit lang ug init unya muulan inig gabii. Gi-assess pa sa atong team kung safe na sila mubalik,” she added.
(For now, (they cannot still return to their homes) because of the weather condition, where it will suddenly become it will rain in the evening. The team is still assessing the situation
On the other hand, the CCDRRMO also confirmed that portions of a barangay road in Barangay Agsungot collapsed, which was also a result of the incessant rains in the past days.
In the meantime, Arce encouraged barangay officials to keep their barangay responders, and disaster and rescue units on standby for any possible eventualities and monitor their surroundings regularly. / with reports from Paul Lauro
